I Guatemala sono una band italiana, le cui sonorità di genere oscillano tra indie, pop e alternative, caratterizzate da una singolare miscela di leggerezza vocale, ritmi energici e mai banali. Tutto questo si fonde in suoni in continua evoluzione e complessità mascherati dalla semplicità dell'ascolto. Il gruppo, composto da Claudio Ladisa (basso e synth), Kocri (voce), Mirko Milazzo (chitarra), e Roberto Cozzi (batteria e percussioni), si è formato alla fine del 2018. Hanno subito iniziato a esibirsi dal vivo con materiale inedito tra Bari e Taranto, programmando diverse date di spettacoli per iniziative ed eventi culturali e locali dal 2019 al 2021. Il gruppo ha consolidato la fanbase con un progetto, guadagnandosi la reputazione di una band dal vivo energica. Il Guatemala ha autoprodotto 2 singoli, inserendoli tra le pubblicazioni di “Sta Sudando la città” e “Cioccolato”.
Nel 2020, I Guatemala sono passati stilisticamente a canzoni più mature, ha iniziato a puntare sulla creazione di una reputazione: classificandosi 2 ° in "E cantava le canzoni" e partecipando a festival, club, ed è entrato in cartellone con Nu Guinea e Jolly Mare, per il Festival delle Onde (Taranto). I Guatemala sono stati selezionati anche al Reset Festival (Torino), dove si sono esibiti insieme a Margherita Vicario, con la quale hanno rielaborato il loro ultimo singolo, “Questioni Di Millimetri”. Hanno anche incontrato Ale Bavo, e hanno trasmesso queste nuove influenze in un progetto unico, "Scudo Rosso", che ha segnato la loro identità come band. Il successo del singolo ha offerto loro l'opportunità di esibirsi su palchi come quello del Rock Port 2021 e del Mercato Nuovo di Taranto.
“Questioni Di Millimetri”, l'ultimo singolo di I Guatemala, è una celebrazione di una celebrazione della sensualità, l'unico modo per riscoprire il contatto umano in cui sentirsi finalmente liberi e uniti. È un'emancipazione celebrata con un ritmo tribale Bembé, tra armonie aperte e ostinate, e linee vocali che boccheggiano nell'orecchio, come un incessante respiro caldo, il desiderio di contatto.

Guatemala is a band from Italy, whose genre-bending sounds fluctuate between indie, pop, and alternative, characterized by singular mixture of vocal lightness, energetic, and never banal rhythms. This is all fused into constantly evolving sounds and complexity masked by the simplicity of listening. The group, consisting of Claudio Ladisa (bass & synth), Kocri (vocals), Mirko Milazzo (guitar), and Roberto Cozzi (drums & percussion), was created at the end of 2018. They immediately started performing live with unpublished material between Bari and Taranto, scheduling several show dates for cultural and local initiatives and events from 2019 to 2021. The group consolidated the fanbase with a project, gaining them the reputation of an energetic live band. Guatemala self-produced 2 singles, inserting them between the publications of “Sta Sudando la città” and “Cioccolato.”
In 2020, Guatemala moved stylistically to more mature songs, started focusing on the creation of a reputation: ranking 2nd in “E cantava le canzoni,” and participating in festivals, clubs, and entered the bill with Nu Guinea and Jolly Mare, for the Onde Festival (Taranto). I Guatemala was also selected at the Reset Festival (Turin), where they performed together with Margherita Vicario, with whom they reworked their latest single, “Questioni Di Millimetri.” They also met with Ale Bavo, and conveyed these new influences in a unique project, “Scudo Rosso,” which marked their identity as a band. The success of the single brought them the opportunity to perform on stages such as that of Rock Port 2021 and the Mercato Nuovo in Taranto.
“Questioni Di Millimetri,” Guatemala’s latest single, is a celebration of a celebration of sensuality, the only way to rediscover human contact in which to finally feel free and united. It is an emancipation celebrated with a Bembé tribal rhythm, between open and obstinate harmonies, and vocal lines that gasp in the ear, like an incessant warm breath, the desire for contact.
The target to which Guatemala band is actually aimed, is the same social class to which the four belong: a generation forced into a confused world made of distances that finds freedom only in music. This is the pivot of their lyrics, which takes these strong emotions head-on for them to exorcise on stage.
The members of Guatemala have different experiences behind them, each having multi-instrumental tendencies, and all compose the arrangements and lyrics. They are four creatively autonomous musicians with artistically contrasting personalities, which guarantees unpredictable productions and the opportunity to break barriers in genres that the band never stops exploring, reworking in a Guatemalan key.

How was your group formed?
I Guatemala nascono nell’ambiente universitario di Bari. Ci siamo incontrati durante diverse serate alcoliche in giro per i vari pub e senza pretese abbiamo deciso di cominciare a suonare insieme. Dopo le prime serate sold out, abbiamo capito che dovevamo lavorare sul serio al nostro suono e pubblicare i nostri brani.
Guatemala was born in the university environment of Bari. We met during several alcoholic evenings around the various pubs and without pretensions we decided to start playing together. After the first sold-out evenings, we realized that we had to work seriously on our sound and release our songs.
Dove avete avuto l'idea del nome del vostro gruppo?
Where did you get the idea of the name of your group?
‘’Guatemala’’ è il nome di uno dei primi brani del nostro progetto che non è mai stato completato perché ha cambiato mille volte pelle. E’ un po’ il nostro paradigma: una costante ricerca sonora ed interiore. Negli ultimi mesi però abbiamo deciso di usare i primi versi di ‘’Guatemala’’ come intro dei nostri concerti, per presentarci e affermare: noi siamo così.
''Guatemala'' is the name of one of the first songs of our project that has never been completed because it has changed its skin a thousand times. It is a bit like our paradigm: a constant sound and interior search. In recent months, however, we have decided to use the first lines of ''Guatemala'' as an intro to our concerts, to introduce ourselves and affirm: that's how we are.
Come viene scritta la vostra musica?
How is your music written?
Ogni brano ha una genesi diversa. ‘’QUESTIONE DI MILLIMETRI’’, ad esempio, è nata jammando nel nostro garage, partendo assolutamente da zero. Poi abbiamo scritto il testo, ispirati da quello che stavamo vivendo durante quel torrido agosto tra giornate piene di musica e notti di passione.
Each song has a different genesis. “QUESTIONE DI MILLIMETRI,” for example, was born from jamming in our garage, starting absolutely from scratch. Then we wrote the text, inspired by what we were experiencing during that torrid August between days full of music and nights of passion.
Come descrivereste la vostra musica a un nuovo ascoltatore?
How would you describe your music to a new listener?
Da mesi cerchiamo di definire il nostro genere senza riuscirci davvero perché ogni brano ha radici e sonorità molto ampie. Sicuramente il nostro punto di forza è il provare ad unire delle ritmiche energiche, tribali e quasi ancestrali a sonorità e melodie attuali.
For months we have been trying to define our genre without really succeeding because each song has very broad roots and sounds. Surely our strong point is trying to combine energetic, tribal, and almost ancestral rhythms with current sounds and melodies.
Quale immagine pensate che trasmetta la vostra musica?
What image do you think your music conveys?
Il nostro progetto musicale si basa su tre parole fondamentali: energia, identità e aggregazione. I nostri brani sono potenti, ed energici e nei testi proviamo a raccontare quello che c’è nella testa della nostra generazione in modo semplice e incisivo. La nostra musica è come una grande danza intorno al fuoco.
Our musical project is based on three fundamental words: energy, identity, and aggregation. Our songs are powerful, and energetic and in the lyrics, we try to tell what's in the minds of our generation in a simple and incisive way. Our music is like a great dance around the fire.

Siamo quattro personalità musicali molto differenti. La nostra musica è un mix tra l’impronta italiana di Enzo Carella, Nu Guinea, Davide Shorty, Joan Thiele e tendenze ritmiche e sonorità internazionali di Tom Misch, KOKOROKO e Buena Vista Social Club.

Siamo nati e cresciuti come una live band e abbiamo suonato tanto in qualsiasi tipo di contesto dai centri sociali alle feste private. Fortunatamente, però, la nostra musica ci ha portato su palchi molto importanti, ad esempio quello di Mercato Nuovo a Taranto o dell’Off Topic di Torino, in occasione del _reset festival 2020.
We were born and raised as a live band and have played a lot in all kinds of contexts from community centers to private parties. Fortunately, however, our music took us to very important stages, for example that of Mercato Nuovo in Taranto or the Off Topic in Turin, for the 2020 _reset festival.
Come descrivereste una tipica giornata in studio?
How would you describe a typical day in the studio?
Quando cominciamo a lavorare alla nostra musica non facciamo altro che jammare per ore ed ore. Inseguiamo un’idea di gusto, cerchiamo le vibrazioni giuste. Il nostro garage è come un laboratorio dove cerchiamo l’alchimia che ci porta alle nostre canzoni.
When we start working on our music we just jam for hours and hours. We pursue an idea of taste; we look for the right vibrations. Our garage is like a laboratory where we look for the alchemy that leads us to our songs.

Abbiamo pronti diversi nuovi brani che faremo uscire nei nostri mesi.

What do you do when you're not playing?
Quando non suoniamo passiamo il tempo ad ascoltare la musica. Ci piacciono molto le situazioni in cui ci si aggrega e passiamo mille serate in giro nei locali della nostra città, a circondarci di persone per contaminarci con le loro storie. E’ da tutto questo che nasce il progetto Guatemala.
When we are not playing, we spend time listening to music. We really like the situations in which we come together and spend a thousand evenings wandering around the clubs of our city, surrounding ourselves with people to contaminate us with their stories. The Guatemala project was born from all of this.
