From Madison, WI, the band ARCHERS emerged in 2015 after being founded by guitarist Ben Koehler, and vocalist Nathanael Pulley. Since releasing their debut EP “Cuts & Bruises,” the band has been anything but dormant. In the past 5 years, the band has toured regionally and performed alongside well-known bands such as I Prevail, Palisades, and From Ashes To New.
The band broke onto the national scene with their metalcore cover of “The Hills” by The Weeknd, which has racked up nearly two million streams to date. They kept the momentum going by following it up with their original tracks “Bleed For This” in 2018, and “Black Lung” in 2019.
ARCHERS’ newest body of work, “NEW NORMAL” was released on all platforms in April 2020. “NEW NORMAL” showcases a completely new sound by intertwining their traditional metalcore sound with pop elements. The new EP ignites a new era for the band and with even more on their plate for 2020, the band shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
How was your group formed?
ARCHERS formed in 2015 through vocalist Nate Pulley and guitarist Ben Koehler. The bands we were in at that time frequently played together which lead to Nate joining Ben's old band and that eventually becoming ARCHERS.
Where did you get the idea of the name, Archers?
Ben's previous band was called Archers & Illuminators. When that band disbanded, we wanted to keep a part of the momentum that band had built up so we decided to call our new band ARCHERS.
How is your music written?
Nate will generally start with writing drums to a song then bring in Ben for guitar and bass before writing vocals. We work with a producer for all the production aspects of our music and will work with outside writing to help keep the creativity flowing and make sure our songs continue to feel fresh.
How would you describe your music to a new listener?
I'd personally describe it as metal written with a pop format.
What image do you think your music conveys?
I think our music conveys and image of personal pain and struggle. But also, a sense of community in being able to connect with others who share the same personal and life struggles.
What other bands inspire your music?
For writing we find inspiration in Wage War, A Day to Remember, Beartooth, The Plot in You, and Dayweeker. We also pull a lot of inspiration from radio pop and pop punk music as well too.
Where have you performed?
So far we've been lucky enough to perform in various parts of the Midwest US. This year we've also started diving into online streaming performances as well too.
How would you describe a typical day in the studio?
We try to work as much as we possibly can. We aim for 12-15 hour studio days to make the most out of any time we spend in a studio setting. We all are perfectionists and want to redo takes as many times as needed to get the perfect one.
What are you working on right now?
We're working on writing new original music as well as re-imagined versions of some of our current songs.
What do you do when you're not playing?
We all have day jobs that we work. And then we enjoy spending time with our significant others and pets. We try to all get together at least once a week even if it's not band related to keep our relationship with each other strong.
