Composto da Riccardo Betti e Marco Lompi, il duo toscano, Dopo Saturno ha recentemente pubblicato il loro EP di debutto, "Tra l’abisso e il collasso". Il disco contiene cinque brani con arrangiamenti minimali e scrittura impegnata con l'obiettivo di rivendicare un'estetica notturna e vagamente esistenziale nel panorama del genere indie italiano.
Consisting of Riccardo Betti and Marco Lompi, the Tuscan duo, Dopo Saturno recently released their debut EP, “Tra l’abisso e il collasso.” The disc contains five songs with minimal arrangements and committed writing with the aim of claiming a nocturnal and vaguely existential aesthetic in the panorama of the Italian indie genre.
Come è stato il vostro gruppo formato?
How was your group formed?
Siamo amici da una vita e abbiamo sempre suonato insieme anche se come Dopo Saturno siamo nati un po’ per caso, un po’ per sfida. Abbiamo ripreso in mano gli strumenti per suonare al matrimonio di fratello di Riccardo, da lì è tornata la voglia di suonare con un progetto inedito e provare a scrivere in italiano, cosa che non avevamo mai fatto. Man mano che scrivevamo nuove canzoni ci convincevano sempre di più e da lì sono nati i Dopo Saturno.
We have been friends for a lifetime, and we have always played together even if with Dopo Saturno, we were born a little by chance, a little by challenge. We picked up the instruments to play at Riccardo’s brother's wedding, and from there the desire to play with a new project and try to write in Italian returned, which we had never done before. As we wrote new songs, they convinced us more and more and from there, Dopo Saturno was born.
Dove avete avuto l'idea del nome del vostro gruppo?
Where did you get the idea of the name of your group?
Non c’è un aneddoto particolare. “Dopo Saturno” ci piaceva perché semplice e un po’ enigmatico, come le nostre canzoni. Per noi “Dopo Saturno” significa uscire dalla propria zona di comfort per avventurarci in nuovi spazi inesplorati.
There is no particular anecdote. We liked “Dopo Saturno” because it is simple and a bit enigmatic, like our songs. For us, "Dopo Saturno" means leaving your comfort zone to venture into new, unexplored spaces.
Come viene scritta la vostra musica?
How is your music written?
Le canzoni nascono da un flusso di coscienza. Riccardo prende in mano la chitarra per conto suo e nel giro di poche ore il 90% della canzone è finita, soprattutto a livello di testo. Poi in sala prove la arrangiamo con gli strumenti che ci sembrano più adatti.
The songs are born from a stream of consciousness. Riccardo picks up the guitar on his own and within a few hours 90% of the song is finished, especially in terms of lyrics. Then in the rehearsal room we arrange it with the instruments that seem most suitable to us.
Come descrivereste la vostra musica a un nuovo ascoltatore?
How would you describe your music to a new listener?
Sicuramente è musica semplice nel senso che cerchiamo di rendere le nostre canzoni orecchiabili fin da un primo ascolto, quindi “pop”. Poi la stessa canzone può avere livelli di lettura più profondi a seconda del numero di ascolti che uno gli concede.
It is certainly simple music in the sense that we try to make our songs catchy right from the first listen, therefore “pop”. Then the same song can have deeper levels of reading depending on the number of plays that one gives it.
Quale immagine pensate che trasmetta la vostra musica?
What image do you think your music conveys?
L’estetica che perseguiamo è quella che traspare anche dall’artwork dell’ep. Un immaginario notturno ma dentro al quale si può sempre trovare un barlume di luce, sia nelle profondità degli abissi che nello spazio sconfinato.
The aesthetic we pursue is the one that also transpires from the artwork of the ep. A nocturnal imaginary but within which you can always find a glimmer of light, both in the depths of the abyss and in the boundless space.
Quali altre band ispirano la vostra musica?
What other bands inspire your music?
Da un punto di vista sonoro synth e chitarra sono influenzati dai nostri ascolti giovanili, quindi tutto il filone dell’indie-rock degli anni 2000. A livello di testi ci sentiamo più compatibili con il filone dei vari Motta, Baustelle, Cremonini, Cosmo e Vasco Brondi.
From a sound point of view synth and guitar are influenced by our youthful listening, therefore the whole trend of indie-rock of the 2000s. At the level of lyrics, we feel more compatible with the trend of the various Motta, Baustelle, Cremonini, Cosmo and Vasco Brondi.

Where have you performed?
Abbiamo suonato tre volte questo settembre, l’ultima data è stata proprio a Borgo San Lorenzo che è il paese dal quale veniamo. C’è stato un buon feedback per numero di persone, speriamo siano piaciute anche le canzoni.
We played three times this September, the last date was in Borgo San Lorenzo, which is the area we come from. There has been good feedback for the number of people, we hope they liked the songs too.
Come descrivereste una tipica giornata in studio?
How would you describe a typical day in the studio?
Fortunatamente abbiamo a disposizione un piccolo seminterrato in una casa in campagna, e lì senza l’ingombro di batteria o percussioni possiamo suonare quando vogliamo. Non c’è una giornata tipo, dipende dagli impegni nel breve periodo. Se abbiamo un live in vista ci concentriamo sull’esecuzione di pezzi collaudati, mentre se non ci sono altri impegni ci dedichiamo alla creazione di nuova musica.
Fortunately, we have a small basement in a country house, and without the clutter of drums or percussion we can play whenever we want. There is no typical day, it depends on the commitments in the short term. If we have a live show in sight, we focus on performing tried and tested pieces, while if there are no other commitments we dedicate ourselves to creating new music.

What are you working on right now?
Il titolo dell’EP riassume perfettamente le sue intenzioni e i suoi contenuti. L’abisso costituisce tutto ciò che è al di fuori di noi, quindi società e temi sociali. Mentre il collasso è qualcosa di intimo, personale e che avviene dentro di noi.
The title of the EP perfectly summarizes its intentions and contents. The abyss constitutes all that is outside of us, therefore society and social issues. While the collapse is something intimate, personal and that takes place within us.

Nella vita di tutti i giorni Riccardo vende case e Marco maneggia numeri al computer.
In everyday life, Riccardo sells houses and Marco handles numbers on the computer.
