La 26enne Maria Giulia Cabiddu, nota anche come EMGY, è una musicista italiana di Lotzorai, un piccolo paese in provincia di Nuoro. L'approccio di Maria alla musica è sempre stato caratterizzato da grande curiosità, versatilità di generi e tanta ambizione. Sebbene i suoi gusti musicali e le sue esigenze artistiche siano cambiati molte volte, il suo obiettivo è sempre stato quello di cantare sul palco con centinaia di persone che urlavano sotto.

Durante la sua infanzia, i modelli di Maria sono stati gli acronimi dei cartoni animati, Hit Mania Dance, Battisti e Pausini. Con questo mix, all'età di 12 anni, inizia a studiare canto moderno. A 15 anni ha debuttato in pubblico con la crew CTD, una band rap / hip-hop italiana, con la quale ha iniziato ad esibirsi sotto il nome di MJ. A 16 anni, in preda a un forte attacco di ambizione, Maria scoprì di voler diventare Lady Gaga, ma non passò molto tempo prima che i suoi gusti prendessero un'altra strada. Ha poi iniziato a cantare principalmente musica di cantautori italiani e canzoni tradizionali sarde. Durante il suo periodo universitario, la sua anima era più Soul che mai, e ha frequentato lezioni private di canto, si è avvicinata alla tastiera e ha partecipato a molte competizioni. Voleva diventare un'artista con una voce calda e piena di lacrime.

In quegli anni, Maria non era sicura di cosa fosse un progetto artistico, figuriamoci di come avrebbe potuto essere, finché non ha deciso di fare sul serio. Lo scorso giugno, grazie all'Accademia Musicale di Bologna, ha incontrato Miraloop Records, scoprendo di voler essere ancora come Lady Gaga. Con l'aiuto di Gerolamo Sacco, produttore dell'etichetta, nasce EMGY: un progetto super pop in italiano, sfacciato e irriverente che tra musica dance e testi maliziosi, vuole infondere una potente carica di positività e autostima.

EMGY ha debuttato lo scorso luglio con Francesco Malaguti nell'impresa "The World Is Moving On", seguita dal suo singolo, "Inopportuna", a novembre. “Tra sonorità francesi, risolini e doppi sensi, potremmo definire inno alla vanità e alla libertà sessuale femminile. Il secondo singolo è già in cantiere e sarà ancora più tosto del primo ".

26-year-old Maria Giulia Cabiddu, also known as EMGY, is an Italian musician from Lotzorai, a small town in the province of Nuoro. Maria’s approach to music has always been characterized by great curiosity, versatility of genres and a lot of ambition. Although her musical tastes and artistic needs have changed many times, her goal was always to sing on stage with hundreds of people screaming below.

Throughout her childhood, Maria’s models have been the acronyms of cartoons, Hit Mania Dance, Battisti and Pausini. With this mix, at the age of 12, she started studying modern singing. At 15, she made her debut in public with the CTD crew, an Italian rap/hip-hop band, with which she started to perform under the name, MJ. At 16, in the grip of a strong attack of ambition, Maria discovered she wanted to become Lady Gaga, but it wasn’t long before her tastes took another path. She then started to sing mainly Italian singer-songwriter music and traditional Sardinian songs. During her university period, her soul was more Soul than ever, and she attended private singing lessons, approached the keyboard, and participated in many competitions. She wanted to become an artist with a warm and tearful voice.

During those years, Maria wasn’t sure what an artistic project was, let alone how it could have been, until she decided to get serious. Last June, thanks to the Music Academy of Bologna, she met Miraloop Records, discovering she still wanted to be like Lady Gaga. With the help of Gerolamo Sacco, producer of the label, EMGY was born: a super pop project in Italian, cheeky and irreverent that between dance music and mischievous lyrics, wants to instill a powerful charge of positivity and self-esteem.

EMGY debuted last July with Francesco Malaguti in the feat "The World Is Moving On," followed by her single, "Inopportuna," in November. “Between French sonorities, risolini and double senses, we could define a hymn to vanity and female sexual freedom. The second single is already in the pipeline and will be even more badass than the first.”

Cosa ti ha ispirato a diventare un musicista?

What inspired you to become a musician?

Quando avevo 12 anni mio padre mi aveva portato a vedere le finali di un concorso di canto per bambini e ragazzi, mi resi conto che ero invidiosa da morire nei confronti dei partecipanti, anch'io volevo salire su quel palco, avere i riflettori puntati addosso, fare emozionare la gente e prendermi gli applausi. Dopo poco tempo mio padre mi ha iscritto alla scuola civica di musica, dove ho studiato canto moderno per quattro anni.

When I was 12 years old my father had taken me to see the finals of a singing competition for children and young people, I realized that I was envious to die for the participants, I also wanted to get on that stage, have the spotlight on them, get people excited and take applause. After a short time, my father enrolled me in the civic school of music, where I studied modern singing for four years.

Come descriveresti la tua musica?

How would you describe your music?

La mia musica la definisco accattivante, sensuale e divertente. Il mio è un progetto POP che prima di tutto deve far breccia nel cuore delle persone e “entrare in testa”. Le mie sono canzoni da cantare a squarciagola, per di più i bassi e le sonorità che richiamano la dance anni 80 non possono far altro che indurre l'ascoltatore a ballare.

My music I call captivating, sensual and fun. Mine is a POP project that first of all, has to break into people's hearts and "get into the head". Mine are songs to sing loudly, what's more, the bass and sonorities that recall 80s dance can only induce the listener to dance.

Dove ti sei esibito? Hai dei prossimi concerti?

Where have you performed? Do you have any upcoming shows?

In passato mi sono esibita nelle piazze di vari paesi in occasione di rassegne culturali, locali e teatri in occasione di festival e concorsi. Purtroppo, essendo molto recente, non mi sono ancora esibita con il mio nuovo progetto.

In the past I have performed in the squares of various countries during cultural exhibitions, clubs and theaters on the occasion of festivals and competitions. Unfortunately, being very recent, I have not yet performed with my new project.

Dov'è il luogo del tuo concerto ideale?

Where is your ideal place to perform?

Così a bruciapelo ti direi la Visarno Arena a Firenze. Ci sono stata una volta in primavera a vedere i System of a Down al Firenze Rocks e ho pensato “chissà che figata vedere tutte queste persone da lassù”.

So point-blank I'd tell you about the Visarno Arena in Florence. I was there once in the spring to see System of a Down at Firenze Rocks and thought "who knows what a cool look to see all these people up there."

Qual è la tua canzone preferita da esibire?

What is your favorite song to perform?

Ovviamente “Inopportuna” :).

Ma se parliamo in generale non potrei mai tradire “What's up” di 4 Non Blondes. Rimane la migliore!

Obviously “Inopportuna" :).

But if we talk in general, I could never betray "What's up" by 4 Non Blondes. It remains the best!

Ne avrei tanti da dire, ma in particolare, inutile ripeterlo, Lady Gaga per il suo estro e la sua potenza, Sia per la versatilità canora e la profondità dei testi; tra gli artisti italiani Mina per il suo fascino e la sua teatralità, Cremonini per 'abilità che ha di giustapporre le parole, e poi una che io

Qual è il miglior consiglio che ti è stato dato?

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Non so se sia stato un consiglio volontario, non so neanche se possa essere considerato un consiglio; più che altro è un ammonimento ma credo che le parole che abbiano intaccato di più il mio modo di essere persona e di conseguenza essere artista siano state “Ti mangi le unghie perché sei timida. La timidezza è un vizio!”. E aveva ragione, spesso la spacciamo la paura di metterci a nudo, di far vedere il vero lato di noi stessi per timidezza, un vizio dietro il quale ci si adagia, una giustificazione. Il mio maestro di teatro Andrea Moretti mi diceva “tendi sempre a stare in disparte, mettiti al centro durante la scena, la scena è tua”.

I do not know whether it was voluntary advice, nor do I know whether it can be considered advice; mostly it's a warning but I think the words that most affected my way of being a person and consequently being an artist were "You eat your nails because you're shy. Se potessi cambiare qualcosa nel settore della musica, quale sarebbe?

If you could change something about the Music Industry, what would it be?

Sicuramente cambierei l'informazione e la formazione imprenditoriale degli aspiranti artisti o comunque di chi vuole fare della musica una professione. Per alcune persone vige ancora il falso mito che “se sei bravo allora qualcuno ti vede, ti produce, investe dei soldi per te e ti fa diventare famoso, se non emergi allora vuol dire che non sei bravo”; no, non è così. Una persona può vivere di musica anche se non è famosa (ovviamente con guadagni nettamente inferiori) e non per questo sentirsi frustrata o che altro, tutto sta nel capire bene in che ambito della musica si vuole lavorare ma per farlo serve che qualcuno del settore te lo spieghi bene. Vuoi essere un artista? Un interprete? Una corista? Un produttore? Un promotore? Vuoi lavorare in tv, in teatro, in radio o in eventi privati? Come faccio a trovare date? Come faccio a trovare date, dove potrei suonare, quanto posso guadagnare, cos'è un contratto discografico? Ecc., ecc...

In ogni caso bisognerebbe rendere gli aspiranti professionisti consapevoli del fatto che occorre investire parecchie risorse di tempo e di denaro, fare sacrifici, scelte, rinunce. Bisogna, studiare, stare sul pezzo, farsi un mazzo tanto e avere tanta pazienza e tanta determinazione prima di avere un guadagno o un riscontro in immagine.

I would certainly change the information and entrepreneurial training of aspiring artists or at least of those who want to make music a profession. For some people there is still the false myth that "if you are good then someone sees you, produces you, invests money for you and makes you famous, if you do not emerge then it means that you are not good"; no, it's not. A person can live off music even if he is not famous (obviously with significantly lower earnings) and not for this reason feeling frustrated or what else, everything lies in understanding well in which area of music you want to work but to do so you need someone in the industry to explain it well. You want to be an artist? An interpreter? A chorister? A producer? A promoter? Do you want to work on TV, theatre, radio or private events? How do I find dates? How do I find dates, where could I play, how much can I earn, what is a record contract? Etc., etc...

In any case, aspiring professionals should be made aware of the need to invest a great deal of time and money, to make sacrifices, choices and waivers. You have to, study, stand on the piece, make yourself a bunch and have a lot of patience and determination before you have a gain or a match in the image.

Qual è un messaggio che vorresti dare ai tuoi fan?

What is a message you would like to give to your fans?

Ai miei fan vorrei mandare un messaggio di autostima: tutti siamo potenzialmente dei fighi se crediamo veramente in noi stessi, in quello che siamo, in quello che facciamo. Mettiti a nudo, non sentirti giudicato, ascolta il corpo e la pancia.

To my fans I would like to send a message of self-esteem: we are all potentially cool if we really believe in ourselves, in who we are, in what we do. Get naked, don't feel judged, listen to your body and belly.

Il prossimo progetto che mi riguarda è sicuramente un album, più featuring e progetti video con altri artisti dell'etichetta.
