Intervista con I Labrador | @ilabrador (Italiano & English)

La storia de I Labrador inizia nel 2017, quando gli artisti Luca e Riccardo, entrambi esperti nella scena musicale locale, decidono di rimettersi in gioco, e creare qualcosa di nuovo.

Nella ricerca del proprio sound, Luca che scrive i testi e Riccardo alla chitarra e alla tastiera, i loro primi demo ritraggono forti influenze anni Ottanta ma con fluttuanti implementazioni tecniche. Per trovare il suono che stavano cercando, i due decisero di aver bisogno di una terza testa nel loro progetto.

L'amico di Luca e Riccardo Lorenzo, appassionato di produzione di musica elettronica, si è unito al duo, e finalmente alzano il livello in termini tecnici e qualitativi.

I sintetizzatori svolgono un ruolo importante nel suono del trio, con sfumature che profumano di New wave e synthwave, pur mantenendo un'eredità pop moderna di facile ascolto. I testi cercano di raccontare storie concrete, senza abbandonarsi a luoghi comuni, ma anche lasciandosi andare a dimensioni semi-oniriche, vite immaginate e storie degne di essere raccontate.

L'influenza dei cantautori italiani degli anni '70 e '80 è palpabile, ma rivela ancora il grande disagio della vita contemporanea. All'inizio del 2020 hanno collaborato con laCantina Records, etichetta indipendente vicentina, per la pubblicazione dei loro primi tre singoli sulle principali piattaforme di streaming online, che stanno riscuotendo un grande successo. I tre iniziano così a lavorare al loro primo album in uscita nel 2021.

L'ultimo singolo dei I Labrador, "Mastice", è stato pubblicato l'11 dicembre 2020.

The story of I Labrador began in 2017, when artists Luca and Riccardo, both experienced in the local music scene, decided to get back into the game, and create something new.

In the search for their own sound, Luca writing lyrics and Riccardo on guitar and keyboard, their first demos portrayed strong 1980s influences but with fluctuating technical implementation. In order to find the sound they were looking for, the two decided they needed a third head in their project.

Luca and Riccardo’s friend Lorenzo, passionate about electronic music production, joined the duo, and they finally raise the bar in technical and qualitative terms.

Synthesizers play an important role in the trio's sound, with nuances that smell of New wave and synthwave, while maintaining an easy-to-listen modern pop legacy. The lyrics try to tell concrete stories, without abandoning themselves to commonplaces, but also letting themselves go to semi-dreamlike dimensions, imagined lives and stories worthy of being told.

The influences of the Italian singer-songwriters of the 70s and 80s is palpable, but still reveals the great distress of contemporary life. At the beginning of 2020, they partnered with laCantina Records, an independent label from Vicenza, for the publication of their first three singles on the main online streaming platforms, which are enjoying great success. The three thus begin work on their first album to be released in 2021.

Come si è formato il tuo gruppo?

How was your group formed?

I labrador nascono un po’ casualmente, Due vecchie conoscenze alla quale non è mai passata la voglia di suonare, che si trovano anni dopo che le loro reciproche esperienze musicali sono finite nel dimenticatoio. Cresciuti con gli stessi pezzi come sottofondo alla loro quotidianità, ci siamo presto accorti di avere una certa affinità che ci ha portato a creare quasi naturalmente nuove canzoni. Quando abbiamo deciso di fare sul serio, rendendoci conto della necessità di alzare l’asticella qualitativa della nostra produzione, abbiamo invitato un amico appassionato di produzione elettronica ad unirsi al progetto, per diventare un membro integrante del neonato trio indie-pop.

I Labrador was born a little by chance, Two old acquaintances who never lost the desire to play, who find themselves years after their mutual musical experiences have ended up in oblivion. Growing up with the same pieces as a background to their everyday life, we soon realized we had a certain affinity that led us to create new songs almost naturally. When we decided to get serious, realizing the need to raise the quality bar of our production, we invited a friend who is passionate about electronic production to join the project, to become an integral member of the newborn indie-pop trio.

Dove ti è venuta l'idea del nome, I Labrador?

Where did you get the idea of ​​the name, I Labrador?

In realtà il nome è nato abbastanza casualmente, e non ha significati profondi. Tra i nostri brainstorming e sproloqui infiniti ci interrogavamo sulla difficoltà del fare della musica pop, intesa letteralmente come musica popolare, che potesse raggiungere le case di tutti. Ci siamo detti, per gioco, a chi non piacciono i labrador? Tenendo il nome provvisoriamente come placeholder in attesa di una qualche altra idea fantastica, alla fine ce ne siamo affezionati.

Actually the name was born quite casually, and it doesn't have deep meanings. Between our brainstorming and endless ramblings we wondered about the difficulty of making pop music, literally understood as popular music, that could reach everyone's homes. We said, for fun, who doesn't like Labradors? By holding the name provisionally as a placeholder while waiting for some other fantastic idea, we eventually grew fond of it.

How is your music written?

Non abbiamo una metodologia precisa e puntuale per la creazione dei nostri brani, delle volte partono da una melodia nata nel bel mezzo della notte e registrata a bassa voce per non disturbare i vicini, altre da delle basi elettroniche o giri di chitarra improvvisati durante la giornata, ai quali successivamente si aggiungono momenti di condivisione, ascolto e confronto nel quale si prova e riprova a studiare la struttura, o cercare il suono giusto da aggiungere o togliere nel determinato momento del pezzo. Alcune canzoni richiedono mesi di lavoro per arrivare ad una demo convincente, altre giusto poche ore, molte infine rimangono a lungo in un limbo da cui speriamo, prima o poi, di riesumarle valorizzarle al meglio.

We do not have a precise and punctual methodology for the creation of our songs, sometimes they start from a melody born in the middle of the night and recorded in a low voice so as not to disturb the neighbors, others from electronic bases or improvised guitar laps during the day , to which are subsequently added moments of sharing, listening and comparison in which you try and try again to study the structure, or look for the right sound to add or remove at a given moment of the piece. Some songs require months of work to arrive at a convincing demo, others just a few hours, finally many remain for a long time in a limbo from which we hope, sooner or later, to exhume them to the fullest.

Come descriveresti la tua musica a un nuovo ascoltatore?

How would you describe your music to a new listener?

La musica italiana negli ultimi anni ha avuto un’incredibile evoluzione e democratizzazione con l’ondata indie. Ad un nuovo ascoltatore racconterei come cerchiamo di dare ai nostri pezzi una “carta” diversa e personale, senza imitare forzatamente i pesi massimi del genere, pur indubbiamente risentendo della loro influenza. La nostra musica vuole essere un inno ai suoni elettronici leggermente retrò, mescolati al piacere di riuscire a comunicare una visione onirica e un’atmosfera sognante, pur trattando temi ancorati nella realtà. Alcuni dei nostri brani sono atmosferici, ci piacerebbe attraverso essi veicolare l’emozione di un tempo andato.

Italian music in recent years has had an incredible evolution and democratization with the indie wave. To a new listener I would tell how we try to give our pieces a different and personal “card”, without forcibly imitating the heavyweights of the genre, while undoubtedly feeling their influence. Our music aims to be a hymn to slightly retro electronic sounds, mixed with the pleasure of being able to communicate a dreamlike vision and a dreamy atmosphere, while dealing with themes anchored in reality. Some of our songs are atmospheric, we would like to convey the emotion of a bygone time through them.

Quale immagine pensi che trasmetta la tua musica?

What image do you think your music conveys?

La nostra musica, che non temiamo di definire leggera, cerca di comunicare in modo disinvolto anche le cose più pesanti da tenere dentro, che venendo allo scoperto ci aiutano a sentirci più leggeri.

Our music, which we are not afraid to call light, tries to communicate in a nonchalant way even the heaviest things to keep inside, which by coming into the open help us to feel lighter.

Quali altre band ispirano la tua musica?

What other bands inspire your music?

Parlando della scena pop e indie italiana degli ultimi anni, è sicuramente necessario citare i vari Tommaso Paradiso, Gazzelle e Coez, ma anche artisti con sonorità o tematiche più ricercate quali Baustelle, Vasco Brondi, Niccolò Contessa. Ma la nostra formazione musicale ed emotiva rimane quella dei grandi interpreti e cantautori italiani che hanno fatto la storia: da De Gregori a Battisti, da Venditti a Battiato. Impossibile poi citare l’influenza subita dalla scena pop-punk americana dei primi anni duemila, che ci ha accompagnato durante l’adolescenza: dai Blink-182 ai Sum 41, dai Green Day agli All Time Low. Per quanto riguarda le sonorità invece, subiamo certamente le influenze della musica pop e new-wave degli anni ’80, con tutta la potenza dei suoi sintetizzatori e delle sue atmosfere esotiche: dai Depeche Mode ai The Cure e i New Order. Per non parlare dell’ondata synthwave degli ultimi anni con artisti come FM-84 e The Midnight, o del dream pop degli M83 e del synthpop dei The 1975.

Speaking of the Italian pop and indie scene in recent years, it is certainly necessary to mention the various Tommaso Paradiso, Gazzelle and Coez, but also artists with more sophisticated sounds or themes such as Baustelle, Vasco Brondi, Niccolò Contessa. But our musical and emotional formation remains that of the great Italian interpreters and songwriters who have made history: from De Gregori to Battisti, from Venditti to Battiato. It is also impossible to mention the influence suffered by the American pop-punk scene of the early 2000s, which accompanied us during adolescence: from Blink-182 to Sum 41, from Green Day to All Time Low. As for the sounds, on the other hand, we certainly suffer the influences of pop and new-wave music of the 80s, with all the power of its synthesizers and its exotic atmospheres: from Depeche Mode to The Cure and New Order. Not to mention the synthwave wave of recent years with artists such as FM-84 and The Midnight, or the dream pop of M83 and synthpop of The 1975.

Where have you performed?

Purtroppo, o per fortuna, non abbiamo ancora avuto occasione di esibirci dal vivo di fronte a nessuno. Era in programma cominciare le esibizioni live nel 2020, ma il periodo storico non ha certo aiutato. Rimandiamo tutto a data da destinarsi, preparandoci continuamente per quando sarà possibile.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, we have not yet had the opportunity to perform live in front of anyone. Live performances were scheduled to begin in 2020, but the historical period certainly didn't help. We postpone everything to a later date, continually preparing ourselves for when it is possible.

Come descriveresti una tipica giornata in studio?

How would you describe a typical day in the studio?

Quando ci troviamo in studio per lo più registriamo le parti vocali e strumentali, discutiamo sull’arrangiamento e cerchiamo di sfruttare al massimo il limitato tempo che attualmente riusciamo a ritagliare tutti insieme. Ovviamente alle spalle c’è anche molto lavoro individuale. Ci teniamo a dire che tutti i nostri pezzi sono stati tutti autoprodotti e registrati in home studio. Siamo orgogliosi del risultato di quella che in fin dei conti è una produzione al 100% domestica. Non mancano poi le litigate, le polemiche, le risate isteriche e le grandi esplosioni di gioia che caratterizzano il lavoro creativo in compagnia: a volte ci prenderemmo a pugni, ma quando alla fine un pezzo suona come vorremmo è impossibile contenere l’emozione.

When we are in the studio we mostly record the vocal and instrumental parts, we discuss the arrangement and try to make the most of the limited time that we currently manage to cut out all together. Obviously, there is also a lot of individual work behind it. We would like to say that all our pieces have all been self-produced and recorded in the home studio. We are proud of the result of what is after all a 100% domestic production. Then there is no shortage of quarrels, controversies, hysterical laughter and the great outbursts of joy that characterize creative work in company: sometimes we would punch each other, but when at the end a piece sounds as we would like it is impossible to contain the emotion.

A cosa stai lavorando adesso?

What are you working on right now?

Attualmente abbiamo diversi pezzi in cantiere, un paio dei quali in uscita in un futuro molto prossimo (uno dei quali accompagnato da un videoclip di cui andiamo molto fieri), ma non vorrei spoilerare troppo. Inoltre, continuiamo a fare prove per realizzare un’esibizione live piacevole, che speriamo di poter condividere con il nostro pubblico il prima possibile, se non ancora in persona, visti i tempi, almeno sfruttando la tecnologia.

We currently have several pieces in the pipeline, a couple of which will be released in the very near future (one of which accompanied by a video clip we are very proud of), but I don't want to spoil too much. In addition, we continue to rehearse to create a pleasant live performance, which we hope to be able to share with our audience as soon as possible, if not yet in person, given the times, at least using technology.

Cosa fate quando non suonate?

What do you do when you're not playing?

Tutti e tre lavoriamo a tempo pieno in settori diversi da quello musicale, e quella che stiamo portando avanti da ormai tre anni è una passione che, anche nei giorni in cui torniamo sfiniti a casa, richiede tempo e costanza. Va da sé che, per portarlo avanti, a questo progetto crediamo moltissimo tutti e tre. Quando non lavoriamo, suoniamo o studiamo, non disdegniamo il cinema, la lettura, e il buon vecchio Netflix (proprio cinema e letteratura hanno un forte impatto anche sui nostri pezzi). Amiamo viaggiare, altra cosa che ci manca particolarmente (come credo un po’ a tutti) e, ovviamente, ascoltare musica, sempre.

All three of us work full time in sectors other than music, and what we have been pursuing for the past three years is a passion that, even on the days when we come home exhausted, takes time and perseverance. It goes without saying that all three of us believe very much in this project to carry it forward. When we don't work, play or study, we don't disdain cinema, reading, and good old Netflix (cinema and literature have a strong impact on our songs too). We love to travel, another thing that we particularly miss (as I believe a little to everyone) and, of course, listening to music, always.
