Il chitarrista e polistrumentista Michele Boni ha avuto una lunga carriera come turnista pop, musicista orchestrale e compositore di musica da film, e ora ha aggiunto al suo repertorio il titolo di “artista solista”.

Michele ha pubblicato il suo primo album da solista, “In Compass Time”, il 28 maggio. L'album è stato registrato insieme ad altri 20 musicisti internazionali, in grado di mostrare all'ascoltatore suoni, colori e culture di tutto il mondo. L'album nasce dal desiderio di Michele di esplorare nuovi mondi e sonorità, per completare la sua carriera di musicista che lo ha visto condividere il palco con artisti come Fedez, Arisa, Gaia Gozzi, Dear Jack, Benji e Fede, e tanti altri. Il progetto discografico nasce anche dall'esigenza di racchiudere, in un album, la sua lunga e attenta ricerca sulla musica folk senza mai dimenticare il senso di una melodia popolare e di facile ascolto.

I musicisti che accompagnano Michele in questo album provengono da tutto il mondo e conferiscono a questo lavoro una veridicità ormai rara senza la "freddezza" dei suoni campionati al computer. L'ascoltatore può infatti ascoltare sezioni di percussioni dal Brasile o dall'India, flauti dall'Irlanda, Bandoneon dal Cile, Duduk dalla Turchia, Kalimbe da Capo Verde e molto altro.

Guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Michele Boni has had a long career of being a pop session player, orchestral musician, and a composer for film music, and now has added the title of “solo artist” to his repertoire.

Michele released his first solo album, “In Compass Time,” on May 28. The album was recorded together with 20 other international musicians, capable of showing the listener sounds, colors, and cultures from all over the world. The album was created from Michele's desire to explore new worlds and sounds, to complement his career as a musician that has seen him share the stage with artists such as Fedez, Arisa, Gaia Gozzi, Dear Jack, Benji and Fede, and many others. The recording project was also born from the need to enclose, in an album, his long and careful research on folk music without ever forgetting a sense of a popular and easy-to-listen melody.

The musicians who accompany Michele on this album are from all over the world and give this work a now rare truthfulness without the "coldness" of computer-sampled sounds. In fact, the listener can hear percussion sections from Brazil or India, flutes from Ireland, Bandoneon from Chile, Duduk from Turkey, Kalimbe from Cape Verde, and much more.

Cosa ti ha ispirato a diventare un musicista?

What inspired you to become a musician?

Ci crederesti se ti dicessi che è stato il film “Il Ciclone” di Pieraccioni? Appena ho sentito quelle chitarre spagnole è stato un colpo di fulmine e devo dire che, anche col senno di poi, il musicista è l’unico lavoro che avrei potuto fare.

Would you believe it if I told you that it was Pieraccioni's film “Il Ciclone”? As soon as I heard those Spanish guitars it was love at first sight and I must say that, even in hindsight, the musician is the only job I could have done.

Quanti anni avevi quando hai iniziato a suonare?

How old were you when you started playing (music)?

Avevo dodici anni e da un giorno all’altro ho capito cosa volesse dire sentire la musica addosso. Ricordo ancora oggi la prima sera con la chitarra che mi aveva comprato mio padre. Facevo vibrare le corde totalmente a caso e mi sentivo felice…

I was twelve and overnight I understood what it meant to feel the music on me. I still remember today the first night with the guitar my father bought me. I used to vibrate the strings totally at random and felt happy...

Come descriveresti la tua musica?

How would you describe your music?

Domanda difficile…ancora oggi non ho trovato una definizione perché mi piace cambiare sempre sia strumento che atmosfere musicali.

Mi piace vedere la mia musica come delle piccole scene di vita vissuta o immaginata; una musica che, seppur strumentale e quindi di nicchia, possa essere associata a qualcosa che abbiamo vissuto. Quando riesco a fare questo mi sento felice.

Difficult question… even today I have not found a definition because I always like to change both instrument and musical atmosphere.

I like to see my music as small scenes of life lived or imagined; a music that, although instrumental and therefore niche, can be associated with something we have experienced. When I can do this, I feel happy.

Dove ti sei esibito? Hai dei prossimi concerti?

Where have you performed? Do you have any upcoming shows?

Ho avuto la fortuna di suonare molto in Italia ed all’estero, ricordo ad esempio con grande piacere il teatro dell’Agorà di Parigi o le belle spiagge della costa cilena con un’orchestra di musica folklorica.

Quest’estate ho in programma un tour con la cantante Gaia (vincitrice di Amici 2020 e partecipante al festival di Sanremo 2021 con il brano “Cuore Amaro”).

I was lucky enough to play a lot in Italy and abroad, for example I remember with great pleasure the theater of the Agora in Paris or the beautiful beaches of the Chilean coast with a folk music orchestra.

This summer I plan a tour with the singer Gaia (winner of Amici 2020 and participant in the Sanremo 2021 festival with the song “Cuore Amaro”).

Dov'è il luogo del tuo concerto ideale?

Where is your ideal place to perform?

Il concerto ideale è ovunque la gente ha voglia di ascoltarti davvero, senza distrazioni. Ad ogni modo se proprio dovessi pensare ad un luogo ideale, direi sempre il teatro perché, piccolo o grande che sia, è sempre un luogo sacro per noi musicisti.

The ideal concert is wherever people want to really listen to you, without distractions. In any case, if I had to think of an ideal place, I would always say the theater because, whether small or large, it is always a sacred place for us musicians.

Qual è la tua canzone preferita da interpretare?

What is your favorite song to perform?

Non credo di avere una canzone preferita da esibire, forse dipende dalla giornata o magari anche dal pubblico.

I don't think I have a favorite song to perform, maybe it depends on the day or maybe even the audience.

Quali musicisti celebri ammiri?

Which famous musicians do you admire?

Mi ritengo uno che predilige la musica di nicchia ma ammiro sicuramente chi riesce ad uscire dalle dinamiche commerciali e discografiche per fare musica senza filtri. Forse in quest’ottica direi Jack Johnson e Vinicio Capossela.

I consider myself someone who prefers niche music, but I certainly admire those who manage to get out of the commercial and record dynamics to make music without filters. Perhaps from this point of view I would say Jack Johnson and Vinicio Capossela.

Qual è il miglior consiglio che ti è stato dato?

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Sii sempre il musicista che senti di essere e non quello che dovresti essere.

Always be the musician you feel you are and not who you should be.

Se potessi cambiare qualcosa nel settore della musica, quale sarebbe?

If you could change something about the Music Industry, what would it be?

Probabilmente il fatto che nella musica di largo consumo ci sono dei canoni troppo precisi (es. il ritornello comincia dopo 43 secondi, oppure serve uno special per allungare il brodo).

Credo che senza sperimentazione non si possano avere prodotti di valore assoluto come succedeva in passato.

Probably the fact that in mass consumption music there are too precise canons (e.g., the refrain starts after 43 seconds, or you need a special to lengthen the broth).

I believe that without experimentation it is not possible to have products of absolute value as it happened in the past.

Qual è un messaggio che vorresti dare ai tuoi fan?

What is a message you would like to give to your fans?

Vorrei ringraziarli per tutto il calore che mi stanno dando da quando è uscito questo mio primo disco e dirgli che presto comincerò a suonare dal vivo con questo progetto, non vedo l’ora!

I would like to thank them for all the warmth they have been giving me since my first album came out and tell them that soon I will start playing live with this project, I can't wait!

What’s next for you?

Al momento mi godrò l’estate ed il tour che devo affrontare, ci penserò da settembre. Quest’anno ho pensato troppo!

At the moment I will enjoy the summer and the tour I have to face; I will think about it from September. This year I thought too much!
