Serena Berneschi è una cantante, autrice, interprete, musicista e paroliere italiana. All'età di tredici anni, dopo aver studiato danza per una decina d'anni, decide di dedicarsi completamente alla musica: inizia così lo studio del canto moderno. Successivamente si è dedicata allo studio di vari strumenti complementari (pianoforte, chitarra, batteria), nonché armonia, composizione e arrangiamento. Serena ha studiato con numerosi insegnanti, sia in termini di tecnica che di esecuzione vocale, in ambito musicale e jazz. Tra questi Stefano Cantini, Barry Harris, Mauro Grossi, Michela Lombardi, John Taylor, Marco Tamburini, Loredana Lubrano, Nino Pellegrini, Elisabetta Antonini e altri. Serena ha ricevuto anche numerosi premi come il "Disco d'Oro" (2012), AFI e FIOFA (2013), che sono premi dedicati ai migliori giovani emergenti in Italia, e ricevuti al Palafiori di Sanremo, nell'ambito degli eventi collaterali del prestigioso Festival, nonché il premio IMAE (2015).
Tra il 2015 e il 2017 Serena ha preso parte a stage formativi presso il CET (mogol music campus), e ha collaborato stabilmente con Pino Scarpettini, uno dei fondatori dei New Trolls. Nel 2018 si diploma con 110/110 in Canto Jazz presso il Conservatorio "Pietro Mascagni" di Livorno, sotto la guida di Mauro Grossi, con cui collabora anche in ambito musicale. Nel 2019, Serena ha pubblicato il suo primo album, "The Painter of Song Project", composto da brani di sua stessa composizione in cui collabora con musicisti jazz di fama internazionale come Stefano Cantini e Michelangelo Scandroglio. Nello stesso anno, ha partecipato alle Umbria Jazz Clinics, vincendo una borsa di studio di $ 15.000 al Berklee College of Music di Boston, il college di musica più prestigioso del mondo. Alla fine del 2020, il suo libro "La pittrice di suoni - Vita e musica di Carmen McRae" - tratto dalla sua tesi - è stato pubblicato da 96 Rue de la Fontaine Edizioni, con tournée promozionali in tutta Italia.

Serena è anche leader di vari progetti musicali, che spaziano dal jazz alla musica brasiliana, dal soul, al funk e all'R & B, alla musica popolare italiana e internazionale. Nei brani canta in italiano, inglese, francese e portoghese. Oltre all'attività concertistica, Serena ha insegnato canto. Dal 2014 si occupa di insegnamento musicale e collabora con varie realtà toscane e non. Da settembre 2020 è vocal coach di riferimento per la Toscana di Hoop Music, etichetta discografica di Pooh, con la direzione artistica di Red Canzian, e la direzione didattica del vocal coach Giancarlo Genise.
Serena Berneschi is an Italian singer, songwriter, performer, musician, and lyricist. At the age of thirteen, after studying dance for about ten years, she decided to devote himself completely to music: thus, began the study of modern singing. As a musical performer, Serena trained with teachers such as Daniele Gargano (acting, diction), and Denny Lanza (musical). Cosa ti ha ispirato a diventare un musicista?
What inspired you to become a musician?
Da piccola passavo interi pomeriggi a casa di un mio vicino di casa, un nonnino molto simpatico e affettuoso che si chiamava Ivano e che amava inventare e raccontarmi storie, che ci divertivamo a mettere in scena in casa con i mezzi più disparati. Anche se questo episodio potrebbe apparire rilevante penso che Ivano mi abbia insegnato a sognare, a immaginare, credo che lui mi abbia fatto appassionare al fatto di raccontare storie, che secondo me dovrebbe essere l'essenza del canto. Ivano se n'è andato l'anno scorso e non gli sarò mai abbastanza grata. Per ricordarlo ho scritto un brano che si intitola appunto "For Ivano" che spero di poter registrare presto... per me è un brano molto importante, ti basti pensare che durante il concerto in cui ho raccontato questa storia ed ho cantato il brano a lui dedicato mi sono quasi messa a piangere!
Ovviamente in seguito ci sono state altre esperienze che mi hanno fatto appassionare alla musica, ma mi piace pensare che le storie raccontate con affetto da Ivano siano state la scintilla da cui tutto è partito.
As a child I spent entire afternoons at the home of a neighbor of mine, a very nice and affectionate grandfather who was called Ivano and who loved to invent and tell me stories, which we enjoyed staging in the house with the most disparate means. Although this episode might seem relevant I think Ivano taught me to dream, to imagine, I think he made me passionate about telling stories, which in my opinion should be the essence of singing. Ivano left last year and I can't be thankful enough. To remember this I wrote a song called "For Ivano" that I hope to be able to record soon ... for me it is a very important song, just think that during the concert in which I told this story and sang the song dedicated to him I almost started crying!
Obviously later there were other experiences that made me passionate about music, but I like to think that the stories told fondly by Ivano were the spark from which everything started.
Quanti anni avevi quando hai iniziato a suonare?
How old were you when you started playing (music)?
Iniziai a prendere lezioni di pianoforte quando avevo solo 6 anni, perché mia madre si teneva molto. Anche a me piaceva il piano, solo che incontrai un'insegnante molto all'antica, rigida e fissata con il solfeggio. Insomma, il tipo di insegnante che non vorrei mai essere!
Risultato? Non capivo la correlazione tra la musica (che mi sembrava così bella e coinvolgente ma durava sempre troppo poco) ed il solfeggio, che occupava la quasi totalità della mia lezione di musica e che equiparavo a un noioso esercizio di matematica. Così smisi di andare a lezione e ricominciai a studiare pianoforte solo a 16 anni circa, quando ormai già studiavo canto da circa 2 anni.
I started taking piano lessons when I was only 6 years old, because my mother cared a lot. I also liked the plan, only I met a teacher very old-fashioned, rigid and fixed with the solfeggio. I mean, the kind of teacher I never want to be!
Result? I didn't understand the correlation between music (which seemed so beautiful and engaging to me but always lasted too little) and solfeggio, which occupied almost all of my music lesson and which I equated to a tedious exercise in mathematics. So I stopped going to class and started studying piano again only at about 16, when I had already been studying singing for about 2 years.
Come descriveresti la tua musica?
How would you describe your music?
A questo proposito voglio chiarire che io sono prima di tutto un'interprete: amo entrare nei panni dei compositori, dei cantautori italiani e internazionali che più amo. Mi concentro molto sull'interpretazione e cerco di sviluppare uno stile unico ispirato sì da quello o da quell'altro cantante, ma sempre fedele a me stessa. Cerco quindi di raccontare storie nel rispetto della mia unicità. Ovviamente recitare e fare teatro mi ha aiutato molto. Non mi considero un'attrice vera e propria, ma cerco comunque quando interpreto una canzone di immedesimarmi nel testo fino a dargli vita, un po' come farebbe un'attrice.
Credo che tutti noi abbiamo una voce interiore che dobbiamo solo scoprire, affinare, perfezionare, rendere ancor più limpida e meravigliosa. Come se fossimo marmo grezzo e dentro ognuno di noi ci fosse una meravigliosa opera d'arte. Questo è ancora più vero per gli artisti, ma credo valga per tutti gli esseri umani. Tornando a me, ovviamente scrivo anche la mia musica e spero di scrivere canzoni sempre più belle, in grado di toccare il cuore delle persone. Però allo stesso tempo amo cullarmi nella musica dei compositori che amo e cerco di imparare da essa sempre di più. Credo quindi che sarò per sempre sia un' interprete sia una cantautrice. Amo molto collaborare anche con altri artisti, perché mi dà nuovi stimoli. A questo proposito è uscito nel 2019 il mio primo Ep di composizioni originali: si intitola "The Painter Song" e ho scritto molti brani dell'EP a quattro mani con Gianni Rubolino, caro amico e bravissimo sassofonista.
In this regard I want to make it clear that I am first of all an interpreter: I love to enter the shoes of composers, Italian and international singer-songwriters that I love the most. I focus a lot on interpretation and try to develop a unique style inspired by that or that singer, but always true to myself. So I try to tell stories respecting my uniqueness. Obviously acting and doing theatre helped me a lot. I don't consider myself a real actress, but I still try when I play a song to identify with the lyrics until it comes to life, a bit like an actress would.
I believe that we all have an inner voice that we just need to discover, refine, perfect, make even clearer and more wonderful. As if we were raw marble and inside each of us there was a wonderful work of art. This is even more true for artists, but I think it applies to all human beings. Coming back to me, of course I also write my own music and I hope to write more and more beautiful songs, able to touch people's hearts. But at the same time I love to lull myself into the music of the composers I love and try to learn from it more and more. I therefore believe that I will forever be an interpreter and a singer-songwriter. I love collaborating with other artists as well, because it gives me new stimuli. In this regard, in 2019 my first EP of original compositions was released: it is called "The Painter Song" and I wrote many songs of the four-handed EP with Gianni Rubolino, dear friend and very good saxophonist.
Dove ti sei esibito? Hai dei prossimi concerti?
Where have you performed? Do you have any upcoming shows?
In questi anni ho avuto modo di esibirmi in svariati posti meravigliosi. Sono felice di avere avuto la possibilità di fare la cosiddetta "gavetta" (poca ormai quasi passata di moda): avendo vari progetti di musica dal vivo (che spaziano dal jazz, alla bossa nova, alla musica italiana, al soul- funk-r&b, ai miei brani originali) le possibilità di esibirmi non sono mancate e sono grata per questo.
Il momento attuale è invece quello che è: avevo molte cose interessanti in vista un po' in tutta la Toscana, con progetti differenti e nuove collaborazioni che purtroppo sono state annullate. Ti segnalo però il mio evento che si svolgerà il 4 novembre 2020 vicino Pisa, presso l' America Graffitidi Calcinaia (Pi). Dalle ore 21 Io e Gianluca Grisafi - il chitarrista con con lavoro abitualmente - proporremo un repertorio di musica brasiliana interpretando i più grandi classici della bossanova e del samba, inserendo anche qualche personale rivisitazione di brani non brasiliani riarrangiati in quello stile.
È un progetto al quale tengo molto e sul quale abbiamo investito molte energie. Ma ne è valsa la pena! L'ultima volta l'abbiamo proposto verso la fine dell'estate alle Cinque Terre, presso la magnifica terrazza del Grand Hotel di Portovenere.
In these years I have had the opportunity to perform in various wonderful places. I am happy to have had the opportunity to do the so-called "gavetta" (little now almost gone out of fashion): having various live music projects (ranging from jazz, bossa nova, Italian music, soul-funk-r&b, to my original songs) the possibilities of performing have not been lacking and I am grateful for this.
The current moment is what it is: I had many interesting things in sight all over Tuscany, with different projects and new collaborations that unfortunately were cancelled. However, I will point out my event that will take place on November 4, 2020 near Pisa, at the America Graffiti of Calcinaia (Pi). From 9 pm Gianluca Grisafi and I - the guitarist with habitual work - will propose a repertoire of Brazilian music interpreting the greatest classics of bossanova and samba, also inserting some personal reinterpretation of non-Brazilian songs rearranged in that style.
It is a project to which I attach great importance and on which we have invested a great deal of energy. But it was worth it! Last time we proposed it towards the end of summer at Cinque Terre, at the magnificent terrace of the Grand Hotel in Portovenere.
Dov'è il luogo del tuo concerto ideale?
Where is your ideal place to perform?
Credo che uno dei maggiori problemi culturali dell'Italia sia la mancanza di educazione musicale: le persone non sono abituate ad ascoltare musica con attenzione, non sono abituate ad ascoltare cosa succede dentro di loro quando ascoltano musica. Di conseguenza, spesso durante un'esibizione gli spettatori chiacchierano, a volte anche a voce molto alta! E questo succede anche quando si trovano davanti musicisti molto importanti, perché come ho detto si tratta a mio parere di un problema culturale ed educativo: visto che spesso la musica insegnata nelle scuole è noiosa e non fa appassionare i ragazzi, essi si abituano ad ascoltare musica solo come sottofondo. Per questo credo sia molto imparare far studiare ai bambini uno strumento... Io personalmente essendo anche un'insegnante cerco di fare la differenza con i miei allievi. Ma tornando alla tua domanda e tenendo conto delle precedenti osservazioni, prerisco esibirmi in situazioni da concerto come teatri, festival, club nei quali il pubblico è predisposto all'ascolto.
I believe that one of the biggest cultural problems in Italy is the lack of musical education: people are not used to listening to music carefully, they are not used to listening to what happens inside them when they listen to music. As a result, viewers often chat during a performance, sometimes even in a very loud voice! And this also happens when very important musicians are in front of them, because as I said it is in my opinion a cultural and educational problem: since often the music taught in schools is boring and does not make children passionate, they get used to listening to music only as a background. That's why I think it's a lot of learning how to make children study a tool... Personally being also a teacher I try to make a difference with my students. But returning to your question and taking into account the previous observations, I plan to perform in concert situations such as theaters, festivals, clubs where the audience is predisposed to listen.
Qual è la tua canzone preferita da esibire?
What is your favorite song to perform?
Questa è una domanda complicata. Credo che un cantante si identifichi di più o di meno in un testo a seconda del momento che sta vivendo nella sua vita. Esempio stupido: se magari sto soffrendo per amore canterò con particolare coinvolgimento una canzone che parla di amori finiti male. Di conseguenza è una cosa molto variabile.
Per questo forse le canzoni che tendono ad emozionarmi ogni volta che le canto sono quelle che parlano di temi universali, come la natura dell'uomo, come la pace. Mi viene in mente "Futura" di Lucio Dalla, "A Change Is Gonna Come" di Sam Cooke, "San Lorenzo" di Francesco De Gregori, "Redemption Song" di Bob Marley, "Agua de Marco" di Tom Jobim, "Imagine" di John Lennon... solo per farti qualche esempio, i primi che mi vengono in mente. Una canzone che mi commuove sempre è "Gigi" di Fabio Concato, che canto in un progetto che ho dedicato alla musica italiana che più amo, con Daniele Aiello al piano. Un'altra che mi tocca molto è lo standard jazz "For All We Know" oppure il brano di Bonnie Raitt "I Can't Make You Love Me". Amo molto le ballad, credo che siano la mia specialità.
Credo anche che tutti noi dovremmo sempre cantare brani che ci emozionano, o che ci divertono, ma che comunque ci trasmettono qualcosa. Credo anche che non dovremmo eseguirle le canzoni come semplici "cover", ma rielaborarle, riarrangiarle, metterci del nostro. Del resto sono una jazzista inside...
That's a complicated question. I think a singer identifies more or less in a text depending on the moment he's living in his life. Stupid example: if maybe I'm suffering for love I will sing with particular involvement a song that talks about loves that ended badly. As a result, it's a very variable thing.
That's why maybe the songs that tend to excite me every time I sing them are those that talk about universal themes, like the nature of man, like peace. I am reminded of Lucio Dalla's "Futura", Sam Cooke's "A Change Is going to Come", Francesco De Gregori's "San Lorenzo", Bob Marley's "Redemption Song", Tom Jobim's "Agua de Marco", John Lennon's "Imagine"... just to give you a few examples, the first ones that come to mind. A song that always moves me is "Gigi" by Fabio Concato, who Sings in a project that I have dedicated to Italian music that I love the most, with Daniele Aiello on piano. Another one that touches me a lot is the jazz standard "For All We Know" or Bonnie Raitt's song "I Can't Make You Love Me". I really love ballads, I think they're my specialty.
I also believe that we should all always sing songs that excite us, or that amuse us, but that still convey something to us. I also believe that we should not perform the songs as simple "covers", but rework them, rearrange them, put our own. After all, I'm an inside jazz musician...

Tra gli artisti italiani: Mia Martini e Ornella Vanoni sono le mie cantanti preferite in assoluto. Fra i maschietti coloro che mi rubano il cuore sono Pino Daniele, Fabio Concato, Lucio Dalla... Certo, sono quelli più legati al jazz, ma che ci posso fare? Amo la musica afroamericana e le sue influenze. Tra gli artisti internazionali, beh... Sicuramente Carmen McRae è la mia cantante jazz preferita. Non a caso le ho dedicato un libro che uscirà a breve "La Pittrice di Suoni. Vita e Musica di Carmen McRae" edito da Rue de la Fontaine Edizioni e scritto a partire dalla mia tesi di laurea in Canto Jazz. In ambito jazzistico (anche se lungi da me categorizzare la musica ) amo molto anche Dianne Reeves e Natalie Cole. Ma amo ovviamente anche Ella, Billie, Sarah, Frank... In ambito più pop adoro Eva Cassidy, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder. Sono anche una grande amante della musica brasiliana, non faccio nomi perché sarebbero troppi. Anzi, ne faccio uno: Tom Jobim. Non mi capacito di come ogni suo brano sia un capolavoro! E non sto parlando solo di "Garota de Ipanema", "Corcovado", "Desafinado", ma anche del Jobim meno conosciuto. Amo alla follia anche Burt Bacharach. E poi amo la serie "Glee" ed i suoi componenti. Conosco quasi a memoria tutte le loro cover!

Qual è il miglior consiglio che ti è stato dato?
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
"Divertiti". Me lo disse un insegnante del campus di Boston del Berklee College of Music alle Umbria Jazz Clinics, dove poi vinsi una borsa di studio. Io gli stavo chiedendo come migliorare quel passaggio tecnico, come respirare meglio, come essere più in stile... e lui mi spiazzó con questa semplice risposta: "divertiti". Si chiamava Jeff Ramsey e era un grande cantante e insegnante, se ne è andato l'anno scorso e non me lo dimenticherò mai. Un'altra cosa che mi disse fu: "hai molto più talento di quanto credi".
Penso che questo sia l'essenza della musica, il giocare, lo sperimentare senza preoccuparsi del giudizio degli altri... Certo, non è sempre facile, specie se si cerca di fare questo di mestiere nella vita, ma quando ci si diverte la musica è più bella.
Il secondo consiglio importante è "ascolta". Non si può fare musica da soli... E non c'è gioia più grande che suonare con grande interplay. E quando questo succede ci si diverte, appunto. Quindi si tratta in realtà di due aspetti collegati fra loro.
"Have fun." A teacher on the Boston campus of Berklee College of Music told me at the Umbria Jazz Clinics, where I then won a scholarship. I was asking him how to improve that technical transition, how to breathe better, how to be more styled... and he spied on me with this simple answer: "have fun." His name was Jeff Ramsey and he was a great singer and teacher, he left last year and I will never forget it. Another thing he said to me was, "you're a lot more talented than you think."
I think this is the essence of music, playing, experiencing it without worrying about the judgment of others... Of course, it is not always easy, especially if you try to do this by trade in life, but when you have fun the music is more beautiful.
The second important advice is "listen." You can't make music on your own... And there is no greater joy than playing with great interplay. And when that happens, you have fun, in fact. So these are actually two interrelated aspects.
Se potessi cambiare qualcosa nel settore della musica, quale sarebbe?
If you could change something about the Music Industry, what would it be?
Un aspetto da cambiare ha sicuramente a che vedere con la poca collaborazione tra noi musicisti (non mi dilungo oltre perché il discorso sarebbe lungo).
Il secondo aspetto da cambiare è di natura giuridica. Penso che in Italia sia necessario introdurre una legislazione che tuteli i musicisti e chi differenzi chi suona o canta in maniera amatoriale, per passione e chi invece lo fa per professione. Questo nell'interesse di tutti.
Allo stesso tempo so che sarebbe molto difficile stabilire i criteri grazie ai quali uno è un professionista e l'altro no. Purtroppo in Italia ci sono molte "cricche", molti gruppi chiusi all'interno dei quali è difficile entrare se non si conosce questo o quell'altro. So di essere molto diretta, ma è così.
One aspect to change certainly has to do with the lack of collaboration between us musicians (I do not dwell any longer because the speech would be long).

What’s next for you?
A breve uscirà il mio libro su Carmen McRae al quale ho accennato in precedenza. Se la situazione lo consentirà vorremmo fare delle presentazioni - concerto in tutta Italia, che celebrerino la più musica di Carmen McRae. Pensa che lei è stata talmente importante per me da volerle dedicare un brano : "The Painter Song" ispirato al soprannome datole dalla cantante Nancy Wilson. Il mio sogno di poter presto incidere un album a lei dedicato. Visto che amo recitare vorrei che fosse una commistione fra recitazione e musica: vorrei scrivere appositamente per il disco dei monologhi in italiano che rendano quindi fruibile il testo originale delle canzoni, che saranno scelte ovviamente all'interno del repertorio della McRae. Con il mio amico e insegnante Daniele Gargano stiamo lavorando anche a vari altri progetti di teatro-canzone (che uniscano musica e recitazione) ma per il momento preferisco non dire di più. Voglio sfruttare questo periodo di "inattività musicale" (almeno dal punto di vista dei live) per dedicarmi all'insegnamento del canto in maniera più continuativa ed essere più presente per i miei allievi, per studiare il più possibile e per elaborare nuovi progetti.
My book about Carmen McRae, which I mentioned earlier, will be released shortly. If the situation permits, we would like to make presentations - a concert throughout Italy, celebrating the most music by Carmen McRae. She thinks she was so important to me that she wanted to dedicate a song to her - "The Painter Song" inspired by the nickname given to her by singer Nancy Wilson. My dream of soon being able to record an album dedicated to her. Since I love acting I would like it to be a mixture of acting and music: I would like to write specifically for the record of monologues in Italian that therefore make the original text of the songs usable, which will obviously be chosen within McRae's repertoire. With my friend and teacher Daniele Gargano we are also working on various other theater-song projects (which unite music and acting) but for the moment I prefer not to say more. I want to use this period of "musical inactivity" (at least from the point of view of live) to dedicate myself to teaching singing more continuously and to be more present for my students, to study as much as possible and to elaborate new projects.
