Born in Padua, Max Nardari is an Italian artist who graduated from DAMS in Bologna with a thesis on Pedro Almodovar. After moving to Rome, he graduated in directing at the NUCT of Cinecittà and in screenwriting at the RAI. In 2003, he founded his own film production house, Reset Production srl, with which he produced various films, short films, documentaries, commercials, and music videos.
After having produced various short films with a social theme for RAI, Nardari shot his first film, "Liubov Pret-a-Portè", an international co-production, which was released in 2017 in Russia in 470 cinemas, and in Italy in 2019 with the title, “Di tutti I colori.” The cast consisted of Alessandro Borghi, Giancarlo Giannini, Nino Frassica, Paolo Conticini, and Tosca D'Aquino. In 2017 with Reset, he produced, wrote, and directed his second film, "La mia famiglia a soqquadro," distributed by Europictures, starring Marco Cocci, Eleonora Giorgi, and Ninni Bruschetta, for which he received various international awards including the 2017 Tokyo Festival, and Il Leone di Vetro, the 75th Venice International Film Festival as best director and Venetian excellence.
In 2018, Nardari was appointed Artistic Director of the Italian-Russian Film Festival Felix Award which takes place every September at the Milan Triennale. He also led the festival with several presenters including Elisabetta Pellini (2019), and Arianna Bergamaschi (2020). In July 2019, he was appointed Artistic Director of the Sabaudia Studios Festival. He also led the festival with various presenters: Tosca D 'Aquino, Flora Canto, Matilde Brandi, and the permanent presence of Enrico Brignano. In November 2021, “Diversamente,” his third film, was released exclusively on the Amazon Prime platform, also produced by Reset Production. The cast consists of Alessandro Borghi, Euridice Axen, Michela Andreozzi, Simone Montedoro, Denny Mendez, Giorgia Wurth, and Claudia Zanella.
Over the years, Nardari has also been the musical author and director of many video clips for international artists such as Lean and Jachynthe. In Italy, he was the author for Raf and Simonetta Spiri, and shot video clips for Fabrizio Moro, Andrea Mirò, Luisa Corna, and many others. Since 2020, he has also returned to music as a songwriter with an English song entitled "Fragile," and an animated video clip made during the lockdown which he presented at the 77th Venice Film Festival, which also won about twenty international awards including the Andromeda Film Festival 2020 in Turkey and the Resistance International Film Festival in Iran. In 2021 his singles "I need you" and "Cento cose" were released, preceding his forthcoming album in English. At the beginning of 2022, his first book entitled “Meglio fare cento cose bene che una male” will also be released exclusively on Amazon.

How old were you when you started playing (music)?
Quanti anni avevi quando hai iniziato a suonare?
Not very young. During my university years in Bologna, I started playing the piano and writing my first songs. Everyone told me it was too late at 22 to start studying an instrument, and since I've always been against it, this pushed me to do so.
After DAMS I moved to London for two years to study music only, specializing in singing, guitar and piano and so, when I arrived in Rome, I was already a little prepared. Within a year I found myself playing in various pubs of the Roman underground scene, such as the famous Locale, together with very young people who would become big names, such as Simone Cristicchi, Marina Rei, Fabrizio Moro, Alex Britti, Niccolò Fabi and Max Gazzè. Then the love for directing also led me to make many video clips, like the one I made for Fabrizio Moro in 2004 and the one a few months ago for Luisa Corna entitled, “Come un uomo” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4uJtjihy1g).
Non giovanissimo. Durante gli anni dell’Università a Bologna ho iniziato a suonare il pianoforte e a scrivere le mie prime canzoni. Mi dicevano tutti che era troppo tardi a 22 anni iniziare a studiare uno strumento, e dato che sono sempre stato bastian contrario, questo mi ha spinto a farlo.
Dopo il DAMS mi sono trasferito due anni a Londra per studiare solo musica, specializzandomi in canto, chitarra e pianoforte e così, approdato a Roma ero già un po' preparato. Nel giro di un anno mi sono ritrovato a suonare in vari pub della scena underground romana, come il famoso Locale, insieme a giovanissimi che sarebbero diventati grandi nomi, come Simone Cristicchi, Marina Rei, Fabrizio Moro, Alex Britti, Niccolò Fabi e Max Gazzè. Poi l’amore anche per la regia mi ha portato anche a realizzare molti videoclip, come quello che ho realizzato per Fabrizio Moro nel 2004 e quello di qualche mese fa per Luisa Corna dal titolo “Come un uomo” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4uJtjihy1g).
How would you describe your music?
Come descriveresti la tua musica?
Energetic, rhythmic, and international. For two years Max Nardari is no longer just a director but also a performer, so he has been reborn. The music was therapeutic for me as I was also writing my scripts. In the last three years I have managed to work miracles, starting to get back into the game, deepening the computer music. I realized that the most suitable sound for my album had to be with a reference to the pop dance of the 80s, 90s which, among other things, are now back in fashion. Consequently, almost all the tracks on the album are sung in English. The dance arrangements were handled by Francesco Arpino, a talented songwriter and music producer with whom I am carrying out the entire album.
Energetica, ritmata e internazionale. Da due anni Max Nardari non è più solo regista ma anche performer, è quindi rinato. La musica è stata terapeutica per me mentre scrivevo anche le mie sceneggiature. In questi ultimi tre anni sono riuscito a fare miracoli, ricominciando a rimettermi in gioco, approfondendo la computer music. Ho capito che il sound più adatto al mio album doveva essere con un richiamo alla pop dance degli anni 80, 90 che, tra l’altro, ora sono tornati molto di moda. Di conseguenza quasi tutte le tracce dell’album sono cantate in inglese. Gli arrangiamenti dance sono stati curati da Francesco Arpino, cantautore e producer musicale talentuoso con cui sto portando avanti l’intero album.
What is your favorite song to perform?

I really care about the song in Italian that I released during the summer of 2021. It is a very important song for me, a turning point in my professional career. In addition to being a summer catchphrase musically, it contains the message of the book, that is, of the multifunctional creative who loves to try his hand at multiple art forms simultaneously. Ci tengo molto a Cento cose il brano in italiano che ho fatto uscire durante l’estate 2021. È un brano per me molto importante, un giro di boa nel mio percorso professionale. Among my idols there have always been Madonna, George Michael, Depeche Mode, Culture club, Robbie Williams. I love Sam Smith and Dua Lipa very much of the new international recruits. In Italy I have always loved Loredana Bertè who I find to be the only historical Italian artist who has managed to renew herself thus keeping up with the times, riding 4 generations.
Tra i miei idoli ci sono da sempre Madonna, George Michael, i Depeche Mode, i Culture club, Robbie Williams. Delle nuove leve internazionali amo molto Sam Smith e Dua Lipa. In Italia amo da sempre Loredana Bertè che trovo sia l’unica artista italiana storica che sia riuscita a rinnovarsi stando così al passo con i tempi, cavalcando ben 4 generazioni.

My first book will be released shortly, the title of which is a bit my slogan: "Centro cose: Meglio fare cento cose bene che una male,” a kind of motivational and partly autobiographical manual aimed at the very young and not only who wish to undertake the artistic path in various fields in an uncertain era like the one we are living in. Last summer's passage anticipated the book.
At the beginning of 2022 the shooting of an international documentary on fashion should begin, then a new ironic short film of mine on the world of followers will also be released, entitled Return to the present starring Daniela Poggi, Attilio Fontana and Clizia Fornasier. I wrote some very funny films with my co-writers, and I hope to make them as soon as possible, in particular a comedy against homophobia entitled Friends by chance that I should shoot in Umbria next spring.
Uscirà a breve il mio primo libro il cui titolo è un po' il mio slogan: “Cento cose: meglio fare cento cose bene che una male”, una specie di manuale motivazionale e in parte autobiografico rivolto ai giovanissimi e non solo che desiderano intraprendere la strada artistica in svariati campi in un’epoca incerta come quella che stiamo vivendo. Il brano della scorsa estate anticipava appunto il libro.
Ad inizio 2022 dovrebbero iniziare le riprese di un documentario internazionale sulla moda, poi uscirà anche un mio nuovo cortometraggio ironico sul mondo dei followers, dal titolo Ritorno al presente con protagonisti Daniela Poggi, Attilio Fontana e Clizia Fornasier.
Ho scritto con i miei co-sceneggiatori dei film divertentissimi e spero di realizzarli al più presto, in particolare una commedia contro l’omofobia dal titolo Amici per caso che dovrei girare in Umbria la prossima primavera.
