Formatisi tra Torino e Casale Monferrato nel 2018, i SAHARA sono un duo electro pop creato da Lucas Da Silva e Tommaso Durando. Il progetto è un incontro artistico con diverse influenze musicali, dove suoni onirici e ritmi sintetici si fondono in sonorità electro pop che presenta freschezza per proporsi in una scena italiana in divenire.
Tommaso e Lucas hanno condiviso diversi anni sui palchi del nord Italia sotto il nome di “The Castillos”, prima di intraprendere questo nuovo percorso artistico. Il duo ha debuttato con i singoli "2020mq", "LUNAMARE" e "Nolan", pubblicati nel 2021 da Piuma Dischi. Con "LUNAMARE", il duo ha vinto un posto nella playlist editoriale "Indie School" di Spotify, rimanendovi per 3 settimane, e un'anteprima nazionale del videoclip della canzone su SkyTg24. Il progetto vanta anche collaborazioni con Fractae, Simone Sproccati e Lorenzo Kaufman.
L'ultimo singolo dei SAHARA, "Palline Colorate", è stato rilasciato il 29 ottobre.
Formed between Turin and Casale Monferrato in 2018, SAHARA is an electro pop duo created by Lucas Da Silva and Tommaso Durando. The project is an artistic encounter with different musical influences, where dreamlike sounds and synthetic rhythms come together in electro pop sounds that presents freshness to propose itself in an Italian scene in the making.
Tommaso and Lucas shared several years on the stages of northern Italy under the name of “The Castillos,” before embarking on this new artistic path. The duo made their debut with the singles "2020mq", "LUNAMARE," and "Nolan," released in 2021 by Piuma Dischi. With “LUNAMARE,” the duo won a place on Spotify's "Indie School" editorial playlist, staying there for 3 weeks, and a national preview of the song's video clip on SkyTg24. The project also boasts collaborations with Fractae, Simone Sproccati, and Lorenzo Kaufman.
SAHARA’s latest single, “Palline Colorate,” was released on October 29.
Come vi è formato il vostro progetto?
How was your project formed?
Veniamo entrambi da un altro progetto, The Castillos, col quale gli anni scorsi abbiamo girato qualche palco del nord Italia e fatto uscire un EP.
Il progetto SAHARA nasce nel 2018, dal bisogno di esprimere la nostra musica attraverso una forma nuova, che non era possibile nel precedente progetto musicale. Da qui deriva anche la scelta di essere in 2: abbiamo limato all'osso il personale, per costruirci intorno il nostro universo sonoro.
We both come from another project, The Castillos, with which in recent years we have toured some stages in northern Italy and released an EP.
The SAHARA project was born in 2018, from the need to express our music through a new form, which was not possible in the previous musical project. From here also derives the choice of being in 2: we have reduced the staff to the bone, to build our sonic universe around us.
Dove avete avuto l'idea del nome del vostro gruppo?
Where did you get the idea of the name of your group?
Il nome è stata un’idea di Lucas, che tracciando una linea immaginaria da Asti (città di nascita di Tommaso) fino a Porto Alegre (città di nascita di Lucas) ha visto che quasi nel mezzo si trovava il Sahara Occidentale. Da qui SAHARA.
The name was an idea of Lucas, who tracing an imaginary line from Asti (Tommaso's birthplace) to Porto Alegre (Lucas' birthplace) saw that Western Sahara was almost in the middle. Hence SAHARA.
Come viene scritta la vostra musica?
How is your music written?
C’è sempre un’idea iniziale: Se arriva da Tommaso si tratta più di una melodia, uno slogan o una base strumentale. Se arriva da Lucas solitamente sono testi, bozze vocali, ritornelli o pensieri scritti.
Lucas si occupa più della parte testuale e cantata e Tommaso della strumentale e direzione sonora del pezzo.
There is always an initial idea: If it comes from Thomas, it is more than a melody, a slogan or an instrumental base. If it comes from Lucas, they are usually lyrics, vocal drafts, choruses or written thoughts. Lucas deals more with the textual and sung part and Tommaso with the instrumental and sound direction of the piece.
Come descrivereste la vostra musica a un nuovo ascoltatore?
How would you describe your music to a new listener?
La nostra musica è un crossover tra la corrente urban dell’attuale musica italiana e il pop più sfacciato, soprattutto sui ritornelli.
Il tutto comunque rimane classificabile all’interno del filone “alternativo”.
Our music is a crossover between the urban current of current Italian music and the cheekiest pop, especially on the refrains.
However, everything remains classifiable within the "alternative" trend.

What image do you think your music conveys?
La nostra musica cerca proprio di trasmettere IMMAGINI.
Cerchiamo di cantare e suonare immagini ben precise, facilmente interpretabili dai nostri ascoltatori così da poterli coinvolgere al 100%.
Our music tries to convey IMAGES.
We try to sing and play very precise images, easily interpreted by our listeners so that we can involve them 100%.
Quali altre band ispirano la vostra musica?
What other bands inspire your music?
Nel panorama italiano ci piace molto come stanno lavorando: Mace, Mecna, Chiello, Venerus e Ginevra. Le reference del mondo sonoro sono soprattutto straniere, potremmo citare: The Weeknd, The 1975, No Rome, Troye Sivan.
On the Italian scene we really like how they are working: Mace, Mecna, Chiello, Venerus and Ginevra. The references of the sound world are mainly foreign, we could mention: The Weeknd, The 1975, No Rome, Troye Sivan.

Where have you performed?
Ci siamo esibiti in provincia nel 2019, quando ancora non avevamo fatto uscire nessun brano.
Poi è scoppiata la pandemia, che ci ha obbligato a focalizzarci sulla scrittura di nuova musica e sulla promozione dei brani.
Ora stiamo organizzando le nuove date per i mesi a venire.
We performed in the province in 2019, when we still hadn't released any songs. Then the pandemic broke out, which forced us to focus on writing new music and promoting songs.
We are now organizing the new dates for the months to come.
Come descrivereste una tipica giornata in studio?
How would you describe a typical day in the studio?
La parte dello studio è la parte più eccitante del nostro percorso perché ti permette di confrontarti con altre personalità ed entrare in un tempio dove tutto il resto scompare e sei totalmente focalizzato sulla tua musica e sulla condivisione con produttori e autori con cui stai lavorando.
Per noi è fondamentale.
The study part is the most exciting part of our journey because it allows you to compare yourself with other personalities and enter a temple where everything else disappears and you are totally focused on your music and sharing with producers and authors you are working with. For us it is essential.

What are you working on right now?
Sicuramente ai nuovi pezzi e tutto quello che viene “post” Palline Colorate.
Oltre all’organizzazione dei concerti live, ovviamente.

Cosa fate quando non suonate?
What do you do when you're not playing?
Entrambi abbiamo lavori d’ufficio.
Viviamo in due città diverse ma al netto degli impegni di lavoro non vediamo l’ora ogni giorno di “skippare” alla fase musicale della giornata, perché è questo quello che vogliamo fare.
We both have office jobs.
We live in two different cities but, net of work commitments, we can't wait every day to "skip" to the musical phase of the day, because this is what we want to do.
