Born in Florence, Valeria Caliandro has Apulian origins, and grew up in Prato, where she currently lives. She has been studying classical piano since the age of six and sang in the gospel choir as a child. It was at the age of twenty that she began studying the guitar. Meanwhile, she cultivated a secret love for writing, and has been writing songs for as long as she can remember existing.
In 2012, Valeria released her first album, "Immacolato haos," under the name of “Vilrouge.” Together with bassist Luca Cantasano (Diaframma / Macchina Ossuta) and drummer Cristiano Bottai (Ustmamò / Articolo 31), she brought her music into independent Tuscan scene. In the following yearsm she had the opportunity to meet and share the stage with artists such as Francesco De Gregori and Carmen Consoli, who invited her to open for the Tuscan dates of the theatrical tour of "Eco di sirene tour." She also opened for other musicians such as Renzo Rubino, Giovanni Caccamo, and Tommaso Paradiso.
Valeria changed tactics, and in 2019, she striped off the dimension of the band and published her album, “La seducente assenza,” under “Valeria Caliandro.” She took her songs on tour throughout Italy in acoustic, piano, voice, and strings formations with cellist Sara Soderi and violinist Jacopo Ciani. Between 2019 and 2021, she started recording her third album, “Miniature,” with the artistic production of Lorenzo Buzzigoli and the collaboration of Paolo Benvegnù and Eugenio Sournia (Siberia).
While the album in still in production, Valeria released her latest single, “Firmamento,” in December 2021.

Ha portato le sue canzoni in tournée in tutta Italia in formazioni acustiche, pianistiche, vocali e d'archi con la violoncellista Sara Soderi e il violinista Jacopo Ciani. Tra il 2019 e il 2021 inizia a registrare il suo terzo album, “Miniature”, con la produzione artistica di Lorenzo Buzzigoli e la collaborazione di Paolo Benvegnù ed Eugenio Sournia (Siberia).
Mentre l'album era ancora in produzione, Valeria ha pubblicato il suo ultimo singolo, "Firmamento", nel dicembre 2021.
What inspired you to become a musician?
Cosa ti ha ispirato a diventare un musicista?
Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I remember a theatrical childhood in which I pretended to sing and play the piano, somehow, I had already decided. My brother played the guitar, we wrote songs together. I just learned a technique, but I kept translating reality with the same passion.
La musica ha fatto parte della mia vita da quando ne ho memoria. Ricordo un'infanzia teatrale in cui fingevo di cantare e suonare il piano, in qualche modo avevo già deciso. Mio fratello suonava la chitarra, scrivevamo canzoni insieme. Ho solo imparato una tecnica ma ho continuato a tradurre la realtà con la stessa passione.
How old were you when you started playing (music)?
Quanti anni avevi quando hai iniziato a suonare?
I started studying piano at the age of 6, shortly after I found myself singing in a gospel choir, doing piano competitions with 4 hands and when I was older, I decided to study classical guitar, an instrument that I had already held, together with the bass, self-taught from middle school.
Ho iniziato a studiare pianoforte a 6 anni, poco dopo mi sono trovata a cantare in un coro gospel, a fare concorsi pianistici a 4 mani e da più grande ho deciso di studiare chitarra classica, strumento che già avevo imbracciato, insieme al basso, da autodidatta dalle scuole medie.

I was lucky enough to play in large theaters, opening the Carmen Consoli Theater Tour, 'Eco di Sirene' Tour in 2017, opening to Francesco De Gregori. But I have played in many clubs, in many salons, in some bookstores, in museums and wherever there is a free piano.

Where would your ideal concert be?

My ideal concert venue is a very large place, such as a theater, or a very small place, such as a living room. A place where people can be gathered, to sit, without distractions.
Il luogo del mio concerto ideale è un luogo molto grande, come un teatro, o un luogo molto piccolo, come un salotto. Un luogo dove le persone possano stare raccolte, a sedere, senza distrazioni.

If you could change something about the Music Industry, what would it be?
Se potessi cambiare qualcosa nel settore della musica, quale sarebbe?
I believe that there is a need for 'bottom-up' work, in human consciences, for an education in listening. You learn to make music only if you learn to listen to it, to listen. The thing that scares me the most today is a poor spectrum of emotional reception. I feel a lot of prejudice, prepackaged judgments, clichés. Little association between music and emotion, therefore also little listening to oneself.
Io credo che ci sia necessità di un lavoro 'dal basso', nelle coscienze umane, di un'educazione all'ascolto. Si impara a fare musica solo se si impara ad ascoltarla, ad ascoltare. La cosa che mi spaventa di più oggi è uno spettro povero di accoglienza emozionale. Avverto molto pregiudizio, giudizi preconfezionati, luoghi comuni. Poca associazione tra musica e emozione, quindi anche poco ascolto di sé stessi.
What is a message you would like to give to your fans?
Qual è un messaggio che vorresti dare ai tuoi fan?
I think the messages are basically all inside the songs. My recurring themes, up to now, have mainly concerned fear, absence and their excoriation, but in the next album there will also be a lot of presence, very present.
Credo che i messaggi in fondo siano tutti dentro le canzoni. I miei temi ricorrenti, fino ad ora, hanno riguardato soprattutto la paura, l'assenza e la loro esorcizzazione, ma nel prossimo disco ci sarà anche molta presenza, molto presente.
