William Wilson is a Classical Guitarist from San Diego, who has performed in a variety of settings over the course of his career. He has released several solo recordings, including the album, “Flamencolele,” which is a collection of Flamenco compositions made specifically for guitar an ukulele. He also released, “Spanish Dances for Classical Guitar,” which is the first complete recording of Spanish Composer Pablo de Sarasate’s Spanish Dances. Wilson’s Argentine ancestry was the inspiration behind his recordings of South American guitar music.
William Wilson’s vast repertoire is filled with not only Spanish influences, but he also has released albums containing classical pieces that can be used for sleep and relaxations, as well as a French lullaby disc, which is just one of many side projects he’s published. His latest solo album, “Calming Music for Classical Guitar,” was released in January 2021, and he was also a guest on his son and Lo-Fi artist Blocktane’s album, “Dreams Never Die, Pt. 1,” released the following autumn.

What inspired you to become a musician?

My first guitar teacher, Peter Pupping, who I still perform with frequently and is a close friend. At age 9 I had wanted to learn electric guitar, but my parents somehow signed me up with Peter, who is an amazing Classical guitarist. He was just an exceptional teacher; I think if he had taught basket weaving, I’d be doing that. I had a somewhat difficult home life growing up and needed something to pour myself into, Peter provided that. Also, my mother was from Argentina. I’ve always held a special place in my heart for South American guitar. Barrios, Villa-Lobos, Lauro, etc. Plus, the music of Argentina, players like Roberto Lara, or folk music like Atahualpa Yupanqui. I’ve always gravitated towards these sounds.

How old were you when you started playing? Do you play any other instruments?

I started guitar at 9 but didn’t get really serious until 13. By that point I was playing 3 hours a day. I had played piano before guitar, which did give me a good musical foundation and helped tremendously in learning music theory and at college.
I played the Bandoneon for a while. It’s the accordion used for Tango. You can hear me playing it on my Tango for One album. The thing was a beast to learn! It took me 3 years just to reach a basic level. There were four different fingerings required (right hand opening, right hand closing, left hand opening, left hand closing) not one of which made any sense!
I’ve also done some work in drumming. In college we had to study various drum styles, South Indian drumming was a favorite. The Indian system of rhythm has been a big influence on my understanding of music.
Add to this, a little banjo, mandolin, and ukulele which you can hear me play on my Flamencolele album.

Is Classical your genre of choice?

Yes, if I had to choose one it would be Classical. Fortunately, I don’t have to choose one! I’ve also spent a good amount of time with Jazz and Flamenco. Somehow, I keep coming back to solo Classical guitar. To me the Classical guitar sits in this magical place somewhere between a piano and a violin. We can play multiple parts like a piano but can also have some of the expressiveness of a violin, adding a bit of vibrato to bring a melody to life if needed.

How do you choose what compositions and side projects you take on?

Sometimes I feel like the projects choose me! I hear something or play something, and an idea takes fire. Like the Flamencolele album, it’s Flamenco music being played on a ukulele. A few years back ukulele was hugely popular, and I wanted to be able to play it for my students. I picked up a used one and started goofing around with it. I didn’t know how to play the thing, so I started playing Classical and Flamenco. I thought this is kind of cool, I bet there is a ton of recordings like this. I looked around and there wasn’t (notable exception Pepe Romero and Daniel Ho have a beautiful album together) So I put together a kickstarter and was successful.

Where have you performed?

Mostly in Southern California with the Peter Pupping Band, of which I’ve been a member for the past 25 years. We’ve done a number of festivals, including the great Jazz Festival up in Idyllwild, CA. And we travelled a little bit (favorite gig was in Maui!). But other than that, lots of parties, weddings, etc.

The Classical Guitar sounds great in a medium sized church. In California we have the old missions here which are beautiful, but also a good size for guitar. (I was actually married here in the San Diego mission.) A dream would be to do a Mission tour and play / record in all the missions up the coast.

Which famous musicians do you admire?

I’ve become a huge Julian Bream fan over the years. When I was 13 or so I saw him in concert and didn’t think too much of it. Lots of Bach, lots of mistakes. Later on, I listened to his first album, especially his Frescobaldi transcription, I was blown away with the sensitivity and beauty of his playing. For him there wasn’t the support structure for learning Classical guitar that we have now, so he had to come up with his own solutions. You can see him developing over the course of his career and always striving to serve the music. I also have an increasing admiration for Ry Cooder. His Buena Vista Social Club recording was an early influence, and I still play Chan Chan taken from that album. But currently I’ve been listening to his A meeting by the river. He recorded it with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt in 1992. It’s one of the most stunning recordings and performances you will ever hear. Such a conversation between two masters. And the sound is so pure and beautiful. Cooder’s musical travels are a huge inspiration for what I hope to do.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

My teacher in college, Fred Benedetti, told me to never say no to an opportunity. I can’t say I’ve been 100% faithful to his advice, but I’ve tried. Which has stretched me over the years and put me in some musical opportunities I probably would have missed otherwise.

If you could change something about the Music Industry, what would it be?

I think there is a lot of good stuff happening right now. Streaming sites like Spotify and Apple Music have actually been a good opportunity for players like me. I’ve had some 40 million streams, from all over the world, which is crazy for a local guitarist like myself. Ten years ago, I wouldn’t have had that opportunity. And there is so much variety available musically, which I love.
That said, your really niche artists struggle to make ends meet. Of my own albums, it’s the ones with the standard repertoire which do best. Newer stuff, like original compositions or transcriptions, don’t get a lot of streams. Not sure what the solution is, but despite the fact that we have access to so much music, people don’t venture out into the unknown enough.

What is a message you would like to give to your fans?

To quote Dostoevsky, “Beauty will save the world.” In my own life and playing I’m always striving towards the good and the beautiful. This world can be such a mess, but all I can do in my little corner is to try and bring beauty into what I do. My first teacher Peter Pupping is fond of the quote “How monotonous the sounds of the forest if the only good music comes from the top 10 birds.” I think all artists have something to contribute, even your local ones.

What’s next for you?

This past year I have not been recording or producing much new music. (Notable exception I did an album with my son Isaac AKA Blocktane, which was super fun!) After my last album took 6 months postproduction, I realized I needed to improve my recording skills. I’ve spent the past year taking recording courses, developing my ear on this website called SoundGym, reading, listening, replacing equipment, experimenting, etc. Plus, learning about video (I’m taking a course on Color Grading right now).
I’m hoping to do some on location recording this year. Find a beautiful space, beg the owner to use it, write a piece (or transcribe) for the space, then record it there. I’ve also started creating music for possible TV placement which I’ve never tried but thought would be fun. I like that they have deadlines, keeps my tinkering down to a healthy level.
Recently I wrote an Homage to the Prelude to Bach’s Cello Suite I, and I started a South American Suite. I thought of fleshing out those and releasing them movement by movement (like the serialized stories of yesteryear) Then putting up the sheet music on my site Classical Guitar Editions, maybe one movement a month. When they’re done, I’ll release them as an EP. My son Isaac releases a lot of EPs, singles, etc. I’ve mostly released albums, but I think smaller works make sense these days, and are really fun to do.
Nell'ultimo anno non ho registrato o prodotto molta nuova musica. (Notevole eccezione ho fatto un album con mio figlio Isaac AKA Blocktane, che è stato super divertente!)
